Zakat: The Fundamental Pillar of Financial Purification

In the magnificent and balanced system of Islam, wealth is not considered the absolute personal property of a human being; rather, it is a trust with man from Allah Almighty. To ensure that wealth continues to circulate in society like a flowing stream—and does not remain concentrated in a few prosperous hands—Allah Almighty has prescribed Zakat as a fundamental pillar of Islam.

Zakat is not a worldly tax, but a great financial worship. It is obligatory (Farz) upon Sahib-e-Nisab (eligible) Muslims on an annual basis to transfer 2.5% (two and a half percent) of their productive wealth (Maal-e-Nami) to the beneficiaries designated by Shariah.

When a believer calculates their Zakat with complete sincerity and pays it, two spiritual revolutions occur simultaneously:

  1. Spiritual Purification: Their remaining 97.5% wealth becomes completely pure and clean.
  2. Financial Growth and Blessing: Their wealth is granted blessing (Barakah).

Dawat-e-Islami invites you to fulfil this most important religious obligation with extreme care, Shariah guidance, and a cheerful heart, making your obligation a beacon of hope for an Islamic and prosperous life for Muslims around the world.

The Commandment of Zakat in the Light of Quranic Verses

In the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty has at numerous places mentioned the command to establish prayer along with the command to pay Zakat together. This continuous pairing is clear evidence of how important a pillar of Islam Zakat is.

Allah Almighty states in the Holy Quran:

" ˹Dear Beloved Prophet,˺ collect zakat from their wealth through which you may purge and purify them, and supplicate for them; certainly your supplication comforts their hearts—and Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing." (Surah At-Tawbah: 103)

The rainfall of Divine mercy descends upon the giver of Zakat. In Surah Al-A'raf, it is stated:

" My mercy encompasses everything, so soon I shall decree My mercy for those who are righteous and give zakat." (Al-A'raf: 156)

Paying Zakat leads to the attainment of piety (Taqwa). In the Holy Quran, one of the characteristics of the pious (Muttaqeen) has been described as follows:

" and spend in Our way from the sustenance We have granted them." (Al-Baqarah: 3)

The giver of Zakat is included in the list of successful people. As in the Holy Quran, performing the act of Zakat has been listed as one of the works of those who attain success:

" Certainly, the believers have succeeded: those who are deeply humble in prayers; those who refrain from futile activities; those who pay the zakat;." (Surah Al-Mu'minun: 1-4)

Allah Almighty helps the one who pays Zakat. Accordingly, it is stated:

"Allah will most definitely help those who help His religion—Allah is All-Powerful, Predominant. Those who, if We grant them authority in the earth,[1] establish the prayer, pay zakat, encourage good, and condemn evil—and the outcome of all matters is for Allah alone. " (Al-Hajj: 40-41)

Giving Zakat is a means of completing one's faith, as the Holy Prophet ﷺ stated:

"The completion of your Islam is that you pay the Zakat of your wealth." (Al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib, Hadith 12, Vol. 1)

At another place, he ﷺ stated:

"Whosoever believes in Allah and His Messenger must pay the Zakat of his wealth." (Al-Mu'jam al-Kabir: 13561)

Withholding Zakat due to stinginess or laziness is actually keeping that wealth with yourself which does not belong to you. The Holy Prophet ﷺ gave stern warnings to those who do not pay Zakat and clarified that the wealth whose Zakat is not paid will become a burden and a cause of punishment on the Day of Judgment.

Conversely, the honest payment of Zakat protects your household from calamities, saves your business from ruin, and makes you deserving of the special mercy of the Allah Almighty in this world and the Hereafter.

Shariah Rules: Who is Truly Deserving of Your Zakat?

Zakat is not a general welfare fund to be spent indiscriminately on any good work. It is an extremely sensitive duty bound by Shariah principles. Allah Almighty Himself has described the 8 Shariah heads of expenditure (Masarif) of Zakat in the Holy Quran:

" Zakat is only for the poor, the destitute, the collectors appointed for it, those whose hearts are to be reached with the love of Islam, the freeing of a slave, debtors, ˹those˺ in the way of Allah, and the wayfarer. A decree from Allah; and Allah is All-Knowing, Most Wise." (Surah At-Tawbah: 60)

In the light of Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh), an essential condition for the valid payment of Zakat is that the ownership of the Zakat amount must be given to an eligible Muslim recipient (Tamleek-e-Shar'i).

Dawat-e-Islami has a formal board of Islamic scholars and jurists (Muftis) who oversee the entire system of collection and payment of Zakat. We guarantee that efforts are made to collect every single Rupee of your Zakat according to Shariah laws and deliver it to completely correct and Shariah-eligible recipients, so that your obligation is fulfilled.
